When the National Oceanic and Aeronautic Administration (NOAA) relocated the Hurricane hunters P-3 Orion and Gulfstream aircraft to Lakeland, Florida, there was a hunt for a hangar door that could perform the task of protecting the aircraft that help protect the eastern seaboard.
The unique features of this project are the two doors located in a precast tilt wall, one 160’ wide by 46’ tall, and the other 135’ wide by 46’ tall. The doors are operated with the Hercul-Eze rubber tire hangar door operators.
Spans of the openings were carried with an engineered steel bar joist system that was integrated with WELL BILT’s sliding hangar door track and soffit system. The sliding hangar doors were engineered to withstand high wind load standards for the aircraft, and both sides were clad with 24 gauge sheeting. WELL BILT also worked with the construction firm to design economical track drainage system so water would not pool on the tracks (an issue often overlooked by other hangar door manufacturers).
Timing was critical with only a five month window to start and finish the building due to the expansion of McDill AFB and the hurricane hunters losing their space. WELL BILT provided its nationwide installation team to complete the install ahead of schedule.
WELL BILT Industries are experts of sliding hangar doors have a committed team of designers, fabricators and installers who are proud to provide quality projects.
