How They Operate

Powered By A Steel Drive Shaft & Cable System

Every Bifold door is driven by a solid steel drive shaft running the full width of the door, powered by a heavy-duty 2 HP+ motor and gear reducer with an electric brake that holds the door at any position of travel. Standard voltage is 230V single-phase, with 208V or 230/460V three-phase available.

Doors are controlled by two-button (Open/Close) or three-button (with Stop) constant-pressure stations — release the button and the door stops instantly. All control stations use a keyed lock-out to prevent unauthorized operation, and lift cables are galvanized steel aircraft cable sized for a minimum safety factor of five.

Pre-hung frame in ASTM A500 Grade B welded square/rectangular steel tubing, minimum 11-gauge wall, min. yield 46,000 psi. Exterior corners mitered at 45° and welded on four sides, except the bottom corners where guide rollers are installed. Framing true to within 1/8″ in 20′.

A solid steel drive shaft runs the full width of the door, driven by gear reducer(s) through a dual chain drive system, supported by bearing mounts with zerk fittings at each cable drum. Lift cables are 3/16″ or 1/4″ galvanized steel aircraft cable, sized for a minimum safety factor of five. Drive motors are heavy-duty 2 HP or larger TEFC type, standard 230V single-phase with 208V or 230/460V three-phase optional, paired with an electric brake that holds the door at any position of travel.

Bifold doors don’t use hydraulic valves or lines at all, they run on a mechanical cable and drive-shaft system. You may want to rename this section. If so, here’s the equivalent content: Cable drums are welded steel tubing with end caps secured to the drive shaft. Limit switches are factory preset based on the number of drum turns needed for the desired clear opening, with over-travel limit switches as a safety backup.

Heavy-duty hinges are factory-welded, with quantity and location varying by door size and wind load. Fabricated with 3/4″ diameter pins tested to withstand 15,000 lbs of tension loading; top and center hinges are pre-lubed for life. Floor lock pins are 1″ diameter cane bolts that engage 1-3/4″ steel-sleeved holes in the concrete floor with a minimum 3″ penetration, operated through a single-handle locking system with an electrical interlock.

Doors seal tightly against the building to limit air loss and can be insulated to a specified R-value. Anti-sail lugs on the bottom guide rollers prevent the door from lifting under negative wind pressure. Every system is factory tested prior to delivery. Testing is video recorded and covers component, installation, maintenance, and general operation. Doors are constructed to comply with all codes and specifications in effect at the time of order.
